Seth Killian talks Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition

Siliconera sat down with Capcom's own Seth Killian to discuss Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition.

In the interview, Killian talks about the graphics and development of the game.

"We didn’t redraw the graphics, of course, those are done with filters and things like that. Even though there are just filters, there was still a lot of work put into that. That’s not even really where most of the money was spent. A lot of back-end technology to implement our own game system of achievements and systems of unlocks. It was a matter of getting into the basics of the code and tearing the code apart from the arcade side to implement it properly. For Third Strike it’s the first time where we’ve had access to the source code, which really paid off. Ripping apart the source code let Capcom add in replay sharing over Xbox Live/PlayStation Network and YouTube. Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition also runs on its own external servers."

It Came From Sega: Streets Of Rage 2

In the 90’s, Streets Of Rage 2 made its way into the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. This awesome beat ‘em up classic improved upon the first game, both graphically and gameplay wise. Specials in the game let you whale on other opponents, and the characters had improved movesets.

It’s my favorite game out of this classic trilogy and one my favorite beat ‘em ups on the console in general.

Set exactly one year from the first game, the evil Mr. X has returned to seek revenge. You have to fight your way from the city, all the way to his evil hideout located on a mysterious island. It’s up to the four heroes of the game of which you choose to put a stop to his plan to take over the city.

It's an addicting game that gets fun and more difficult as you play it and progress. Complete with its challenging bosses and enemies that you encounter along the way, you get to use whatever is around you as a weapon. Find a knife on the floor your enemies dropped? Pick it up and use it against them.

Almost everything you find in the area of the game can be used as a weapon and can also be breakable.

Norcal Regionals 9 recap and final thoughts

This tournament had some amazing upsets.

In SSFIV:AE, four Yuns made the top 4 and one of them won the tournament. Daigo takes another tournament. His new serious attitude toward the game shows the world that he was only playing around in the previous installments of the game. Will he be stopped at the next tournament?

The losers bracket matches of Ricky Ortiz vs Julio, Wolfkrone and Marn
Ricky took out out two Yuns then Wolkrone's Viper and made it into top 3. Vangief vs Wolfkrone was a match that people felt came too early in the bracket but was hype nontheless.

Filipino Champ and Justin Wong did not make it into top 8 surprisingly with Justin losing to Mr. Naps and his Evil Ryu and FutureChamps' Fei Long. Filipino Champ was very upset at his loss. He did play a best of five match vs. Daigo and beat his Ryu 3-2 but lost easily 3-0 vs. Daigo's Yun.

It Came From Arc System Works: Guilty Gear

Guilty Gear is one of the coolest 2D fighting games to ever hit the PlayStation console back in 1998. The game had an awesome rock n roll theme with a soundtrack that hyped up the gameplay.

One of the characters in the game is named Axl Low. His appearance was based heavily on the lead singer of the band Guns N Roses, Axl Rose. There are a lot of band references throughout the game and you can tell that it was heavily influenced by pop culture and music.

“Heaven or Hell! Lets Rock!” yells the announcer upon starting a match.

The game is based on combos and how well you can time and pull them off. It’s a game where you can’t really button mash because pressing the wrong button would leave you wide open for someone to destroy you. It’s a deep game that takes practice to learn all of its awkward moveset commands. Once you get the character's movesets down, the game gets you hooked.

Starbase Arcade results for June 16, 2011

The Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament at the Starbase Arcade featuring two out of town players for the local tournament, Nerd Josh and Furbaduck, took place midnight (June 16, 2011) in San Rafael, California.

Filipino Champ showed why he is the epitome of consistency, once again taking the top spot. Taking the number two spot was Dacidbro who gave F. Champ all he could handle, but not even the kitchen sink could hold down the Champ.

Chrisis, a favorite amongst the commentators took third place, while Falcomist placed fourth. Kbeast and Tyram tied for fifth.

The biggest shocker of the night was Nerd Josh's failure to make it in the top ten. He placed 13th overall.

It Came From Nintendo: Super Smash Bros. Melee

After the success of Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64, the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee hit the Nintendo GameCube over two years later on December 3, 2001 in North America.

If you loved Super Smash Bros, then you probably loved its sequel. The improvements made in Super Smash Bros. Melee were substantial and left many gamers satisfied.

New features included an Event Mode, where you try different challenges such as Fire Emblem Pride. You could also take pictures by plugging in a controller to the fourth port of the GameCube. In the game you could collect trophies that resembled characters and items. Gamers could read about its history once you achieved them.

The characters roster was greatly expanded, you could now dodge even in midair, and the characters had more move sets that made the game a more technical fighter then it used to be. There was also of course the graphical upgrade, the new items that were scattered across the game, and new stages from each Nintendo universe.

You could even play enhanced remakes of stages from the previous Smash game as well. One of the coolest new features in the game was the Adventure Mode where you could play through stages based on each character from their universe.

Remember the stage 1-1 from Super Mario Bros? Ever thought to yourself playing through it as Pikachu from Pokémon, or Link from The Legend of Zelda? That was the weird nostalgia that Adventure Mode brought, playing through it with different characters. At the end of the Level would be a boss from that video game’s universe.

For example, in the end of the Super Mario Bros stage you have to fight both Mario and Princess Peach on top of her castle from Super Mario 64, which is also a playable stage in the game.

This game was a dream come true, not only as a fighting game but also because of Adventure Mode that made the game a platformer in its own unique way.
