Top Five EVO moments in Street Fighter history

Twenty-five years of Street Fighter.

On August 30, 1987 the first Street Fighter game was released by Capcom. Little did anyone know that this would be the beginning of perhaps the best fighting game series in the history of gaming. Just as unbeknownst to all was a strong community waiting to explode.

The fighting game community (FGC) has grown quite a bit since the 1990s. Things went from bets in Arcades to HD streams with thousands of dollars hanging in the balance. Then there's the mecca of all fighting game tournaments, Evolution (EVO).

In honor of the 25th anniversary of Street Fighter, FightVG.com lists the top five EVO moments in Street Fighter history.

It only happens once a year. EVO is the pinnacle of competitive fighting game tournaments. Players from all over the world train all year to make it to Las Vegas and become EVO champion in their respective game or games. See EVO 2012 results here.

To the "stream monsters" and tournament goers, the importance of EVO is a no brainer. But when it comes to casual fans, how can the significance of such an event be explained? Sonic Boombox has released a mini-documentary titled, "What is EVO?"

In the video, various competitors and fighting game community (FGC) standouts give their take on what EVO means. Those interviewed include Dieminion, Daigo, PR Balrog, Seth Killian, Markman, Zhi, Dr. B, Tasty Steve, Jaha.

NetherRealm is "definitely aware of the Evo guys" and will accommodate them in Injustice: Gods Among Us

Since the announcement of Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm has turned some heads. The game features heroes and villains from DC Comics. Those in the fighting game community (FGC) have expressed anticipation for the title, but are approaching it with caution.

There are numerous reasons to believe that Injustice may cause a disturbance in the tournament scene. One reason is the fear of it being too similar to the Mortal Kombat series. While Boon has addressed that fear, he hasn't touched on how stages might impact tournament play.

The silence is broken.

Evo 2012: Top 5 Hype Moments by Maximilian (Video)

Another Evo event is in the books. Evo 2012 went down from Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas July 6-8. Six major titles were showcased, but only five moments made Maximilian's list of hype moments.

Evo 2012 was a wild ride.

The best players in the world were vying for the top prize in their fighting games. The six major tournaments were Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition v.2012, Mortal Kombat 9, King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter x Tekken, and SoulCalibur V.

Evo 2012: "ASSIST ME!" Panel Part 1

The "ASSIST ME!" cast attended Evo 2012 for their panel at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. If you haven't been keeping up with Maximilian, allow me to fill you in. "ASSIST ME!" is an Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (UMvC3) series. This brings characters of the game to real life.

Wesker, Deadpool, X-23, and Doctor Doom are just a few names featured in episodes of the series. Max and Doom are roommates in the series and they usually encounter a UMvC3 friend or foe. Things took a turn for the strange when Max turned into Ghost Rider for an episode.

The popular web show may have hit some bumps in the road, but the overwhelming support from fans has kept it going strong. See part one of "ASSIST ME!" at Evo 2012 below.

The dust has finally settled.

Evo 2012, the granddaddy of fighting game tournaments, has wrapped up after a wild weekend (July 6-8). Competitors were sent home empty handed and champions were crowned. Just as it has been since its birth, Evo was a memorable event.

Top players were vying for the ultimate prize and bragging rights in a slew of tournaments. Games such as Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition v.2012, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, King of Fighters XIII, and more were showcased.

An emotional Seth Killian gave thanks to Ultra Chen and the community for all that they've done for him and the fighting game scene. He made it clear that this would not be the end for him in the community and he remains a Capcom fan despite his move to Sony Santa Monica.

This was a close one.

FightVG.com asked you which Evo 2012 tournament you were looking forward to seeing most. All games came within at least three votes of tying the winner. So which game earned your hype the most?

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition v.2012 (AE v.2012).

Lost on the Evo 2012 craze?

Don't worry we've got you covered. Evo 2012 is set to begin tomorrow (July 6) and will continue until Sunday (July 8). With so many streams to look out for, it's understandable to be concerned with missing a second of the action.

But you don't have to miss a thing. There will be five Evo streams this year. Three will come from the official Evo channels, while the other two will come from 8 Way Run and Kiei. For more info on the last two streams, click here.

All five streams will be available for viewing on the homepage of FightVG.com in the form of tabs. They will be listed stream #1, stream #2, stream #3, 8 Way Run, and Kiei. Sometimes the main event just isn't enough.

The games scheduled for the main room at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas for Evo 2012 promise to be filled with hype. Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition v.2012, Mortal Kombat 9, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter x Tekken, and SoulCalibur V are the main titles that will be on display.

But what about the side tournaments? 8 Way Run and Kiei (via SRK) will provide live streams of the other fighting games. 8 Way Run has Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, while Kiei has you covered with Blazblue Continuum Shift: Extend (BBCS:EX), Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, and Melty Blood.
