As magical as the idea sounds, cross-platform play isn't happening with the 3DS and Wii U versions of the latest Super Smash Bros. title. Find out why it couldn't be done inside.
And boom does the dynamite.
When Satoru Iwata said the 3DS and Wii U versions of the next Super Smash Bros. would be compatible, cross-platform play wasn't in the plans. Lead designer of the upcoming fighter, Masahiro Sakurai told Joystiq that due to the stage difference in each version, cross-platform play is not possible.
The news comes despite Sakurai saying the character roster would be limited in the Wii U version due to the limitations of the 3DS. It isn't all a wash however as both versions are compatible in one way. You will be able to transfer customized characters from the 3DS to the Wii U version.
Further details are scarce.
